Visiting Artist Gregory Crewdson at Memphis College of Art

Memphis, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art will present internationally acclaimed photographer Gregory Crewdson in a lecture on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m. in Callicott Auditorium, Rust Hall, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. A special reception will precede the lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the Rust Hall Main Gallery.

Crewdson is known for his elaborately staged photographs of small town American life. Utilizing lighting techniques and equipment usually reserved for the motion picture industry, Crewdson’s photos are cinematic in style, transforming mundane scenes into surreal visions.

A native of Brooklyn, New York, Crewdson received a B.A. from the State University of New York at Purchase in 1985 and an MFA in Photography from Yale University in 1988. He is currently Director of Graduate Studies in Photography at the Yale University School of Art. Crewdson’s work is included in many public collections including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. A retrospective of his work, spanning his career from 1985–2005 was shown as a traveling exhibition at major museums in Europe from 2005–08.

His most recent body of work, Sanctuary, premiered at Gagosian Gallery in New York in 2010, then traveled to the White Cube in London and Gagosian Gallery in Rome. Crewdson has published several books of his photographs and is the recipient of numerous awards including the Skowhegan Medal for Photography, the national Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship and the Aaron Siskind Fellowship.
