Spring Break TripSpring Travel Trip to Florence, Italy

Last month a group of 24 MCA students, faculty and alumni traveled to Florence, Italy for the annual Spring Break travel trip. Led by MCA faculty Adam Hawk and Dr. Lucienne Auz, the journey began in Florence where students visited the famous Uffizi Gallery, climbed the towering heights of the breathtaking Florence Cathedral, attended mass at the basilica of San Miniato al Monte and a performance of the opera La Traviata, enjoyed delicious Italian cuisine, and explored the city’s rich artistic culture. On a day trip to Ravenna, students viewed the stunning Byzantine mosaics at the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, Basilica of Sant’Apollinare, and the Basilica of San Vitale. On a separate trip, students explored the two historic cities of Siena and San Gimignano. Here students strolled the red brick lanes of the medieval city centers, enjoyed sweeping views of the Tuscan landscape, and visited the renowned Siena Cathedral. It was an exhilarating experience for all who attended, and the students were eager to incorporate what they had learned into their artistic practices. Students who were enrolled in the course for credit will exhibit works inspired by the trip next month at the MCA Gallery at Playhouse on the Square. The exhibit will open May 5 and continue on view through June 4. More information about this exhibit will be forthcoming over the next few weeks.
