Life Drawing Landscape Painting Woodworking Studio COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Beginning Drawing Learn how to draw by looking at and analyzing what is usually taken for granted: shape, space, light and line. Given these tools, students learn to perceive the three-dimensional world and transform it to a flat surface. Carefully planned exercises initiate students into the world of drawing and acquaint them with the most basic concepts used in all art making. Even with no artistic experience, students learn new skills and a new way of seeing the world.

Instructor –Peter Bowman has taught drawing, painting and two-dimensional design for over 25 years. He holds a BFA from Memphis College of Art and an MFA from Montana State University. He enjoys using the ordinary out of context and likens his own work to a series of still photos taken from a documentary film of his own visual environment. His works have been featured locally, regionally and nationally in solo and group exhibitions. Beginning Painting (This class is full)
Various methods of acrylic painting are explored with an emphasis on color theory, color mixing, tonal variation and glazing techniques. A variety of artists' styles are studied to give students a greater understanding and appreciation of painting methods. Students experiment with form, proportion and modeling in a studio setting. Designed for beginners, this class is also excellent for artists who would like to improve their painting skills and techniques.

Instructor – Marc Rouillard holds a BFA from Memphis College of Art. He has worked as a commercial artist, illustrator and graphic artist and art director for a graphic design studio. Landscape Painting
For those who enjoy both art and nature, this course provides exposure to painting fundamentals within nature itself. Students learn to use color, visual elements and painting techniques. The course begins with drawing as a way to learn to organize and compose from nature and moves quickly into painting directly from the landscape. Basic drawing experience is recommended. These open drawing sessions concentrate on the study of the human figure drawn from life. Many artists find drawing the nude human form in our studio setting an ideal way to hone their skills. An MCA facilitator is present, though there is no instructor. No registration is required; just drop in and draw! Mondays

Digital PhotographyImprove the quality of your photographs by learning how your digital camera can work for you. This class covers the use of your digital camera, how to compose a better picture, how to work with lighting and what elements are essential to make an average photograph into a great one. Image capture, rather than manipulation and output, is the focus of the class. Classroom meetings and field components are included. Students supply their own digital SLR camera.

Instructor – Haley Morris-Cafiero is an instructor and technician for the photography department at Memphis College of Art. She received an MFA at the University of Arizona in Tucson, majoring in ceramics, photography and printmaking. She is currently working on methods for combining her photographic work with traditional clay techniques. Register Top Fused Glass Studio Fused glass is a technique involving kiln-fired stained glass. Glass fusing is used to create unique art, jewelry, vessels and sculpture. Students learn how to cut, arrange and fuse together glass pieces with beautiful results. This class introduces students to the many possibilities of this delightful medium. This simple but stunning art form will take you to a new level of creativity. Tools are provided for use in class, or students may provide their own.

Basic Bronze and Aluminum Casting Students in this class learn to make personalized items such as switch plate covers, bookends or wall/ garden tiles cast from bronze or aluminum. Students learn basic foundry principles through mold-making processes such as green sand and resin-bonded sand casting. Students construct low-relief castings using existing objects and produce original working patterns of their own. Students also learn how to mold patterns and cast molten metal. Each student will ultimately take home two or more cleaned castings in either aluminum or bronze. Students provide their own leather work gloves and closed-toe work boots.

Instructor – Meg Goodman earned a BFA in sculpture, with emphasis on foundry and blacksmithing from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She has worked for several pattern and mold shops around the country, serving as shop foreman at a lead foundry specializing in fountains and architectural ornamentation. In 2006, Meg served as Artist in Residence at the National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis.
Register Top Intro to Enameling on Metal
Students are introduced to the basic processes of enameling as used by the metal smith and jeweler. Using torch and kiln firing techniques, students create a basic palette of test samples from which they enamel several objects. Basic metal techniques including soldering, cold joinery, basic hollow forming and surface finishing, in addition to several enameling techniques, are explored in the class. Students leave the class having made a variety of objects such as beads, brooches, pendants and earrings.

Instructor – Meg Goodman (see bio above) Register Top Jewelry & Small Metals Casting The basics of lost wax casting, as used by jewelers and metalsmiths, is the focus of this class. Students will make several pieces of jewelry (rings, pendants, sculptural forms, etc...) using the lost wax casting process. Models will be made from various types of wax, then invested and burned out leaving a hollow cavity in the shape of the original. Metal is then melted and centrifugally cast into the form leaving them with the metal positive of the original piece. Additional techniques will include open face sand casting, cleaning and patinazation, and polishing.

Instructor – Bill Price, metal arts instructor at Memphis College of Art, received a BFA in small metals from MCA and an MFA in blacksmithing from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. He served as the head metal smith for the National Ornamental Metal Museum for three years. For the last ten years Bill has exhibited work throughout the U.S. and abroad, and maintained a working studio producing furniture, as well as architectural and sculptural forged objects.  Beginning woodworking students create a simple project that introduces them to the basic power tools and techniques used in fine furniture making. Students work in MCA’s spacious and well-equipped wood shop with high-quality materials. They develop good technique and shop habits while improving woodworking skills that can be applied to future projects. Tuesdays / 6 sessions / October 5 - November 9

Instructor - Kenneth Houk has worked in architectural woodwork and furniture-making for over 30 years. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Memphis and studied at the Appalachian Center for Craft at Smithville, Tennessee.
