Memphis College of Art Students Win National Broadside Competition

Memphis, TN– The work of Memphis College of Art students Marie Provence, a senior illustration major from Lawrenceville, GA, and Samantha Taggart, a senior graphic design major from Moss Point, MS, was selected as the winning entry in the National Portfolio Day Association [NPDA] juried competition. The entry, National Portfolio Day Broadside Comprehensive 2011–2012, an  informational broadside, will be produced in Memphis and distributed to over sixty thousand high schools and junior colleges throughout the United States and Canada in late summer.

The national competition was held recently as part of the National Portfolio Day Association’s annual meeting in Sarasota, Florida. Meeting participants representing the College were Susan Miller, Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services, and Annette James-Moore, Dean of Admissions.

Memphis College of Art submitted two entries—placing first and second. In addition to the winning selection by Provence and Taggart, students Gina Davis, a senior graphic design major from Memphis, TN, and Justin Wheeler, BFA 2010, Illustration, from Shreveport, LA, designed the broadside placing second. The project was based in the departments of graphic design and illustration. The structure of the assignment notes the College’s commitment to inter-disciplinary courses of study. Associate Professor David Charles Chioffi directed the project in conjunction with Associate Professor Joel Priddy.

This will mark the fourth time MCA has produced the national broadside in six years of competition, preceded by alumni: Michael Force, BFA 2004 and Michael Hildebrand, BFA 2005; Meredyth Kime, BFA 2007 and Jonathan Yablonski, BFA 2008; and Ryan McGahan, BFA 2010 and Jeremiah Patlan, BFA 2009.

Additionally, MCA is the only college to host three National Portfolio Days annually.

The NPDA is the only organization of its kind, consisting of members of National Association of Schools of Art and Design and representing the highest standard of visual arts education available in the United States and Canada.
