One of two camps in Shelby County to be accredited; twelve new classes offered

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art (MCA) announces that its Summer Art Camp program has achieved accreditation status from the American Camp Association, the only nationwide organization that accredits all types of organized camps. MCA’s art camp is one of only two camps in Shelby County—and the only art camp in the region—to earn this distinction. Memphis College of Art will also offer 12 new classes for the 2017 summer camp, including Design Thinking, Digital Painting, Animation, Kinetic Sculpture and Fashion Design. All classes have a 8-to-1 student/teacher ratio or lower and offer students a highly engaged, collaborative learning environment. Registration for Summer Art Camp 2017 opens March 1.

“We are thrilled that the ACA has recognized our efforts to become an accredited summer camp which allows us to better serve children aged 3-18 years throughout the region,” said Cece Palazola, MCA’s director of Community Education. “As an accredited camp, parents can be assured we offer the very best practices in the youth development field as well as engaging, educational activities that will enhance children’s creativity and build foundational artistic skills.”

There are two camp paths for students; the classic foundational camp which is an in-depth day camp and features longer studio hours, running Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The other option is the half-day camp, which is ideal for busy families and offers a variety of courses in artistic study during weekdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or 12 p.m.-3 p.m. Additional care will also be offered in the mornings and afternoons from 8-9 a.m. and 3-5 p.m. for campers and parents who would prefer extended hours.

Celebrating 80 years in 2016, MCA’s Community Education program provides quality learning experiences and is driven by fostering creativity, respecting individuality, promoting lifelong learning in the arts, and serving as a community arts education resource. Campers this year can choose from a variety of class options, ranging from Sculpture, Painting, and Photography, to Animation, Digital Art, Fashion Design, and new STEAM courses (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics). Six weeklong camp sessions will be offered starting June 5 through July 21. A Camp Preview Day will take place on April 1 from 2-4 p.m., featuring a special preview discount that can be applied to camp registrations that day. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available, and the deadline to apply for a scholarship is May 4. MCA’s Summer Art Camp is now one of the thousands of camps nationwide to earn Accreditation from the American Camp Association (ACA), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1910. Accreditation is an in-depth process in which camps must meet up to 300 industry-established health and safety standards and undergo an in-person audit.
