Gothic calligraphy was used in medieval Europe around 1200-1500. They style shares characteristics of Medieval architecture, such as its vertical appearance, and decorative elements. Learning to write Black-letter (Textura, Gothic, Fraktur, Old English) properly is a good foundation for many aspects of calligraphy. In class we will learn and practice the rules of letter construction, as well as discuss the topics of pen, inks, papers, crafts and good reference books. Be ready for lots of notes and ideas. Bring a pencil, ruler, eraser and scissors. Adult Continuing Education course (non-credit). CE 2402 / Register by Jan. 27
