Memphis College of Art Presents Shane McDermott’s Seahorse in Sequence: Creating a Comic

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art will present Seahorse in Sequence: Creating a Comic by MCA instructor Shane McDermott in the Rust Hall Alumni Gallery, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. The exhibition will be on view Jan. 6–27, 2016, with an opening reception on Friday, Jan. 15 from 6–8 p.m.

Seahorse in Sequence explores McDermott’s creative process through a selection of pages from his current young adult comics project, The Seahorse Chronicles. Set in the 1980s, the story follows two young brothers and their dog as they wield a seahorse-shaped talisman, which eventually transports them to a fantasy world full of adventures. McDermott conceived the auto-mythography as a love letter to his own childhood, one that playfully recalls fiction as fact. The exhibition reveals the visual development from his initial scribbles on paper, to black and white panels inked with a brush, and finally to vivid, digitally colored pages ready for print.

McDermott received his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from MCA in 2005, and his MFA degree in Comics from the California College of the Arts in 2015. Shortly after earning his undergraduate degree, McDermott worked for the Commercial Appeal as a staff editorial illustrator. In addition to his work for the Commercial Appeal, McDermott has created illustrations for other local publications, posters for the Memphis Roller Derby, and educational comics for clients such as Glencoe/McGraw-Hill. McDermott currently teaches Comics and Illustration classes at MCA.

Gallery hours for Seahorse in Sequence are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday noon–4 p.m. All MCA exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public. For more information, visit mca.edu.
