MCA Presents Visiting Artist Phillip Andrew LewisMEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art will present interdisciplinary artist Phillip Andrew Lewis in a lecture on Thursday, March 20 at 7 p.m. in the Callicott Auditorium, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. The lecture is free and open to the public. A native Memphian, Lewis attended Manchester Metropolitan University in the U.K., received his BA from University of Memphis and his MFA from Memphis College of Art. Lewis has exhibited his work both nationally and internationally and was the recipient of the 2012 Creative Capital Grant in Visual Art for his ongoing project, SYNONYM. He has also received support for his research from the Foundation for Contemporary Art, New York; the Tennessee Arts Commission, Nashville, Tenn.; the Lyndhurst Foundation, Chattanooga, Tenn.; the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and the Urban Arts Commission, Memphis, Tenn. In 2005, Lewis co-founded Medicine Factory, an independent arts organization in downtown Memphis committed to supporting installation-based work. He currently heads the photography and media program at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. Lewis’ interdisciplinary work incorporates photography, objects, digital media, video, sound and installation. Lewis often connects his creative work with historical events and science. His work revolves around the investigation of light, sound, space and time, studying drone, repetition, vibrations and the subsequent patterns that emerge. He incorporates a site-sensitive approach to constructing environments with a constant and dominating tone or mood, presenting atmosphere for mental and physical navigation. His work tends to hover on the edge of perceptibility, exposing the limits of what can be measured. Using a variety of tools, he examines the moment between the visible and invisible, sound and silence, material and immaterial. Lewis is also engaged in a growing number of collaborative processes and projects. Photo: Phillip Andrew Lewis, Barbarism Begins At Home, 2011, pigment print, 11” x 14”
