Internationally recognized sculptor, MCA professor presents exhibition at Playhouse on the Square

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art (MCA) presents Composure, a sculptural exhibition by Associate Professor Leandra Urrutia, on view through Jan. 1, 2017 in the MCA Gallery at Playhouse on the Square, 66 S. Cooper St.

Composure features a variety of ceramic sculpture, through which Urrutia experiments with formal and psychological balance. Some works take the human form and convey emotion, while others exhibit Urrutia’s study of formal sculpting and pottery principles.

Urrutia earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Ceramics and Drawing from Southwest Texas State University in 1994, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Mississippi in 1999. Urrutia has been involved in the Studio Nong Artist Collective since 2013—an artist residency and cultural exchange with master sculptors from the Guangxi Arts Institute in China and professional artists and educators from the Kansas City Arts Institute. Urrutia has exhibited around the nation and world, and is the recipient of ArtsMemphis’ 2014 Emmett O’Ryan Award. Her work is featured in the permanent collections of the Kinsey Institute and Sandford M. and Diane Besser.

Composure is one of many exhibitions that MCA hosts for the public each year. All MCA exhibitions are free and open to the public. Artwork is available for purchase, and a portion of the proceeds benefit the college’s scholarship fund. For more information about this exhibition and other MCA events, visit

Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday, 1–5 p.m. and on show nights.
