MCA Announces Tara Bullington-Baker Exhibition in Alumni Gallery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art announces resurgence, an exhibition of work by Tara Bullington-Baker in the Alumni Gallery, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. The exhibition will be on view Nov. 26 through Dec. 19 with a reception on Friday, Dec. 6, 6–8 p.m.

The works in resurgence are intuitive, weaving “compositions of fragmented memories” from materials such as paper and rope. “There’s a unique richness in old books and antiquarian objects that can only be created with the passage of time,” says Bullington-Baker. “When this history is integrated into a network of unsophisticated materials, held delicately together by wire and thread, it becomes a parallel for the mind and body. My intention is to provide an undercurrent, leaving the viewer to discover his own narrative, by association.”

Bullington-Baker, a native of Alabama, received her BFA in Painting and Sculpture from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Following graduation, she moved to Los Angeles to live and work as an artist, later moving to Memphis where she earned her MFA. She currently teaches 2-D and 3-D Design at the University of North Alabama and credits Alvin Sella, Cy Twombly and Louise Bourgeois, as well as her love for fiction and poetry, as influences on her work.
