Memphis College of Art Announces Sankofa: An Ancestral Journey by Dail Chambers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art announces Sankofa: An Ancestral Journey by Dail Chambers, on view May 18–July 30 in the Rust Hall Alumni Gallery, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park.

The title Sankofa comes from the philosophy of the west African Akan people—the word means “to reach back and get.” In the exhibition, Chambers presents work that resulted from her book Itshanapa, which details the quest to discover her identity by researching the life of her maternal grandmother and other familial history. The featured work is a collection of sculpture incorporating found objects, installations and excerpts of creative writing.

Chambers graduated from Memphis College of Art in 2007 with her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a minor in Art History. Her work focuses on the migration of African American women through ethnographic and genealogical research. Chambers returned to St. Louis after graduating from MCA, and has since founded the Yeyo Arts Collective, a nonprofit that promotes the arts among women and families in the city. Her work and the Yeyo Arts Collective have been featured in the St. Louis American, Art in America, the St. Louis Beacon and Saint Louis Magazine. Chambers was the recipient of the Saint Louis Visionary Award for Emerging Artists in 2011, and is the author of Itshanapa (Bailey Girls Publishing, 2014).

Gallery hours for Sankofa: An Ancestral Journey are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday, noon–4 p.m. All MCA exhibitions are free and open to the public.
