El Espacio en MedioMemphis College of Art Announces El Espacio en Medio by Wesley H. Ortiz

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art (MCA) announces El Espacio en Medio, an exhibition of works by MCA Instructor Wesley H. Ortiz, on view Sept. 16–Oct. 23 in the MCA Gallery at Playhouse on the Square, 66 S. Cooper St.

In El Espacio en Medio, meaning “the space between,” Ortiz explores in his works the concepts of space, distance and relationships by employing different values, temperatures, edges and marks. “The paintings in El Espacio en Medio are a departure from representation,” said Ortiz. “Instead of focusing solely on the image, they require viewers to venture into the work and move in and out and through the marks that comprise each work. Through this interaction, viewers are able to see and inhabit the spaces between.”

Passages and objects that appear in the foreground, both formally and technically, are painted as the background and vice versa. “Displaying process, history and spatial relationships is the primary goal of my approach to creating art. I am simply painting the space between and capturing spatial relationships within the work,” said Ortiz.

Ortiz was born in Amory, Mississippi in 1975. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art from Mississippi State University in 1998, and completed his Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art at the University of Mississippi in 2013. Ortiz works predominantly in painting and drawing, but occasionally works in three-dimensional media as well. Ortiz joined the MCA faculty in 2014 as an instructor, and has taught courses and workshops in Drawing, Painting, Color Foundation and 2D Design.

El Espacio en Medio is one of a variety of exhibitions that MCA hosts for the community every year. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday from 1–5 p.m. and on show nights. All MCA exhibitions are free and open to the public.
