Lauren Lane Opens Princess Cult in MCA Alumni Gallery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art announces Princess Cult, an exhibition of work by Lauren Lane in the Alumni Gallery, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. The exhibition will be on view Feb. 15 through March 26, with a reception on Friday, Feb. 21, 6–8 p.m.

Lane is a professional artist who lives and works in Portland, Idaho. She received her BFA from Missouri State University and her MFA from Memphis College of Art. According to Lane, her work is greatly influenced by her own experiences as a female power lifter and the funny idea that pink is a girl color only.

“The abundance of the traditionally girly adornments is meant to make an ironic statement about femininity and how it is commonly defined within society, says Lane. “The pieces in the exhibition extrapolate on this sentiment to the highest extent, overwhelming the viewer with pink and sparkly objects, challenging them to reevaluate their perspective. In a modern world where gender is now seen as fluid and something to be defined by individuals, are pink sparkly things truly representative of what is known as the ‘fairer’ sex? Are women ever able to escape the Princess Cult?”

The Alumni Gallery is open for viewing on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. MCA exhibitions are free and open to the public.
