Joey Slaughter Exhibition Debuts at Memphis College of Art

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis College of Art invites everyone to attend its new Alumni Exhibition by MCA alumnus Joey Slaughter. The show, titled, “I meant to get back to you, but I had a lot going on,” will be on display Aug. 17 through Sept. 30 in the Alumni Gallery in Rust Hall in Overton Park. A special show reception will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6-9 p.m.

Slaughter’s work is best described in his own artist’s statement: “My artwork investigates the ‘look’ of digital information as it is transmitted around us, providing an overabundance of stimuli and therefore, distractions. I am an admirer of objects, especially toys and furniture. These unique objects along with their subsequent distractions, are referenced through my creation of semi-abstract symbols rooted in their instruction manuals. To illustrate the physical presence of all this information, these symbols are then expanded into the 2D and 3D realms through the use of vinyl cutters, laser, and CNC routers. These cut drawings are then combined with painting and other hand-made pieces, resulting in a blend of tight and loose, machine and man. They are not at odds with one another, but rather work together to make a unified whole. The combination of these traditional and non-traditional processes is important, and allows for a play between spontaneity and precision.”

Slaughter received a Louisiana Division of the Arts Career Advancement Grant for this alumni show, which helped cover the supplies to make the work that will be on display in the Memphis College of Art Alumni Gallery.

Rust Hall’s Alumni Gallery is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday – Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Admission is free.
