herstories Exhibition to Open at Hyde Gallery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — What does it mean to be a woman? The answer to this question may be as diverse in scope and perspective as is the history of humankind, but a new exhibition will attempt to open the conversation. herstories opens Jan. 29 and will run through March 1 in the Hyde Gallery, Nesin Graduate Center, 477 S. Main. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Jan. 31 from 6–9 p.m.

The exhibition is curated by Haelim Choi Allen, assistant professor of art at Union University in Jackson, Tenn. Allen immigrated from Korea to the United States in 1976 with her parents and two younger sisters and grew up in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. She is a three-time alumna of the University of Maryland at College Park, most recently receiving her MFA in painting and sculpture.

“The concept of herstories is to show the diverse perspectives of regional female artists,” said Allen. “Through their visual work, they share a snippet, a glimpse, of the numerous stories of what it means to be women. One artist may place herself as the subject matter, capturing the reactions around her; others evoke memory and meaning through specific objects. Aspects of the invisible, the underrepresented parts in a woman’s life, serve as a platform for conversation. Fairytales blend with the realities of life. As I survey the work represented in the show, I see a common bond of telling our story—her story.” herstories features work by Allen, Lisa Alembik, Beth Edwards, Haley Morris-Cafiero, Melinda Posey, Babette Shaw and Melanie Spillman.

Hyde Gallery hours are Wednesday–Saturday, noon–5 p.m. The gallery will be open from 6–9 p.m. on Jan. 31 for the opening reception. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
