Don’t miss Hawk’s new body of work that deftly employs technological and traditional processes. Hawk’s research has been focused on bridging the gap between craft and modern innovation through the use of such technology, beginning with 3D printing and expanding to use other digital media. A technology he currently explores is the use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to manipulate surfaces that have been enameled and fired. This again juxtaposes a new process with an old method. Using a CNC laser, Hawk etches into the enamel, revealing the bare metal underneath. The precision of the laser allows for incredibly intricate patterns on a small scale, such as for jewelry making.
Most importantly, this research and exploration has helped Hawk resolve pressing questions within himself. Does this technology replace the skill of the maker? For him, it does not. It puts the work back into his hands to be finished using craftsmanship he has gained through years of experience. How does this separate from mass production? It allows for rapid idea development, embracing the speed by which information is taken in and shared in today’s world, but the final result is still uniquely crafted using traditional techniques in a new way. Hawk is excited to continue developing ideas and possibilities in this field of study, further pushing the marriage of his craft background with modern techniques as they become accessible.
