Eszter Sziksz’ Gently Expanding Universe in MCA Alumni Gallery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis College of Art will present Eszter Sziksz’ Gently Expanding Universe, Nov. 25–Dec. 11 in the Alumni Gallery, Rust Hall, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. An opening reception will be held on Friday, Dec. 5, 6–8 p.m.

Sziksz, a European artist, has lived and traveled in countries in both Europe and Asia, and earned her BA degree from Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, Hungary and her MFA degree from Memphis College of Art. Her work blends papermaking, installation and video elements and has been shown in regional and international exhibitions including the Santorini Biennale in Santorini, Greece; the Krakow International Print Triennial in Krakow, Poland; the Museo del Brigantaggio in Itri, Italy and ICEHOTEL in Sweden.

In Gently Expanding Universe, Sziksz’ works center around an unusual medium—ice. “My recent work is a transition between traditional printmaking and digital art,” said Sziksz. “The ice allowed me to work with slow movements in my videos.” Sziksz casts and freezes the ice sheets and then screen prints images, mainly portraits, on the surface. During the printing process, the ink freezes to the ice and, as the ice starts to melt under the image, the ink dissolves into water and starts to slowly fade away. “Life is the biggest miracle of all,” said Sziksz, “but it is restricted to a short time span. Life is fragile and fast and my goal is to capture the present moment in a longer period of time. Working and printing on ice allows me to step outside the everyday physical and chronological limitations—I can freeze and control time. It is amazing!”

Gallery hours for the Gently Expanding Universe exhibition are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday, noon – 4 p.m. MCA exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public. For additional information, visit
