Dani Harris’ From My Heart to Yours Opening in Alumni Gallery

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art announces the opening of From My Heart to Yours by Dani Harris in the Alumni Gallery of Rust Hall. The exhibition will be on view from Oct. 22–Nov. 12 with an opening reception on Friday, Nov. 1 from 6–8 p.m.

Originally from Chicago, Harris is a graduate of Memphis College of Art, receiving her BFA in Design Arts in 1987. She began her career as a medical illustrator at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and has also worked at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, Glasshouse 383, as studio assistant to former Memphis artist Alonzo Davis and, currently, as a graphic designer with Signet, Inc.

While maintaining a career as a graphic designer, Harris has kept her hands in the fine art world, continuing to draw and exhibit whenever possible. Harris first fell in love with figure drawing after taking her first life drawing class at MCA, and her early years at St. Jude contributed to her attention to detail in her drawings. Until recently, Harris worked solely in black and white but has begun to add color, incorporating words and collage into her drawings. “For so long I have had three separate interests—drawing, painting and collage,” said Harris, “I wanted to find a way to bring them all together.” Harris’ work today mixes different textures with paper, drawings, paintings and/or found objects. Some pieces include words from whatever story, poem or quote that is going through her head at the time. Harris’ newest pieces use the heart as a symbol of different concepts of love and affection. “With my work I’m not trying to change the world or make a statement,” said Harris, “I just want to touch people, make them feel something to identify and connect with.”

Rust Hall’s Alumni Gallery is open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
