Cat Normoyle Exhibition At Playhouse on the Square

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis College of Art announces the opening of Mapping Moments by Cat Normoyle on Jan. 10 at Playhouse on the Square, 66 S. Cooper St. The exhibition will continue on view through March 2.

Normoyle received her bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design from Georgia Institute of Technology and her MFA in Graphic Design from Georgia State University. Prior to graduate school, Normoyle worked at Atlanta-based marketing Agency Trend Influence as a designer on the brand strategy and innovation team. At Trend Influence, she had the opportunity to work with Fortune 500 companies such as Coca-Cola, Toyota, Levi’s, Unilever and Kimberly-Clark. She is currently a visiting instructor at Memphis College of Art, teaching a range of classes including advertising, packaging, typography and print design.

In Mapping Moments, Normoyle mapped points of intersections on the small island of Vinalhaven off the coast of Rockland, Maine over the course of a weeklong conference with Design Inquiry in the summer of 2013. Video capture, photography, personal journal entries and conversations across place and time are overlaid to make interesting connections with time-based information. The result is a series of subjective mapped moments viewed from the lens of the artist.

“Maps are representations of a place in time,” says Normoyle. “They are often subjective of the cartographer. In many ways, mapping is a format for documenting time and moments. My work attempts to explore the relationships between the map, the process of mapping and the cartographer.”

Playhouse’s MCA Gallery is open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Sunday from 1–5 p.m. and on show nights.
