Emily Miller

MCA brings the street art of Emily Miller, a 2014 graduate of MCA’s Illustration program, into the Alumni Gallery. Miller’s large scale wheatpaste murals can be spotted throughout Nashville, Tennessee from the forgotten side streets of the city’s thriving hub, to the dilapidated structures at its industrial fringes. Miller often prints her illustrations at a small scale using traditional letterpress and screen printing techniques. Every Wednesday of the school year, from September to May, a group of MCA students dedicate their lunch break to draw at the Memphis Zoo. There are no obligations or commitments required to join in, except to collectively sketch and observe. The Zoodles group makes 30 trips to the zoo a year, and had 40 students participating over the 2016 fall term. They sketch at every venue and in every type of weather. Downing Pryor LaToya Ruby Frazier

MCA’s 2017 Downing Pryor Distinguished Visiting Lecturer is LaToya Ruby Frazier, an internationally recognized photographer and a 2015 MacArthur Fellow. Frazier works in photography, video and performance to build visual archives that address industrialism, rustbelt revitalization, environmental justice, healthcare inequity, family and communal history. Frazier received the International Center for Photography Infinity Award in 2015 for her book The Notion of Family (Aperture 2014). Frazier has exhibited widely around the United States and internationally at venues including the Brooklyn Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, Massachusetts, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
