Blane de St. Croix Comes to Memphis College of Art
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Memphis College of Art welcomes sculptor Blane de St. Croix from Brooklyn, N.Y., as part of the college’s ongoing Visiting Artist Lecture Series. De St. Croix’s presentation will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Callicott Auditorium (Rust Hall, Overton Park). The event is free and open to the public.
De St. Croix, who obtained his BFA from Massachusetts College of Art and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art, is a contemporary artist who creates sculptural objects, installations and drawings. His work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally in solo and group shows in venues all over the world. He has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the West Collection Prize and the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant. Additionally, he has been awarded many notable international and national fellowship and artist residencies and has been written about in publications such as The New York Times, Art in America, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune and Sculpture Magazine.
“My recent body of work explores the geopolitical landscape through drawing and sculptural installation. I conduct extensive research on each project—through on-the-ground site visits, aerial flyovers, photographic documentation, interviews, Internet mining and satellite imagery. All of the work and elements within it are completely sculpted by hand, creating a more intimate and controllable result than by way of digital methods,” explained the sculptor in an artist’s statement. “Employing a combination of natural and industrial materials, I am interested in articulating humankind’s desire to take command over the earth, revealing distinct conflicts with ecology, politics and ourselves in free-standing sculptures and large-scale installations that utilize architectural space in a distinct, powerful and imposing manner.”
Memphis College of Art provides a rigorous curriculum in an intimate, diverse community to empower generations of leading artists, designers and educators to flourish professionally and contribute valuable ideas to society.
