MCA welcomes transfer students who decide that a career in visual arts is what they want. As a transfer student, you will join MCA students and students who have come from community colleges and other 4-year colleges and universities.
MCA will accept up to a maximum of 72 transfer credits with a grade of “C” or better from any accredited university or college, including Advanced Placement credit that have been earned in the last 10 years and are applicable to MCA’s undergraduate degree requirements, with a grade of a “C” or higher from any regionally accredited and/or NASAD accredited institution. Of those 72 credits, a maximum of 12 credits in art history and/or 30 credits of liberal arts and/or 42 credits of studio coursework may be considered for transfer into to MCA. Grades for transferred credit will not be calculated into the MCA cumulative grade point average. These may include 30 studio elective credits.
When transferring to MCA, students must submit official transcripts at coursework attempted at all regionally accredited institutions they attend. The Office of Academic Affairs will evaluate each course to determine equivalency to MCA courses. Courses without an exact equivalent will be in as elective coursework to the area where appropriate. Only completed class work will be evaluated. If a submitted transcript has class work “In Progress”, those classes will not be added to the evaluation until a final transcript showing completion is received.
Applicants may be requested to submit a portfolio of work created in transferable coursework to the area head of the applicant’s program of student to determine if any transferrable coursework will transfer in as required program courses.
Transfer students are encouraged to consider enrolling in Foundations coursework that is offered in the summer before they enroll at MCA. Many introductory program courses require completion of the foundations coursework and completing the credits in the summer may accelerate your time of program completion. Please ask your Admissions Counselor about summer course and financial aid options.
Tennessee Transfer Pathways
MCA is proud to be a participating school in the Tennessee Transfer Pathway program! Students transferring to MCA on the Tennessee Transfer Pathways will have met all General Education/Liberal Arts course requirements, 12 credits of Foundations required coursework, 6 credits of Art History required coursework and one Studio elective.
Students who attend community colleges that do not offer ARTH 2010 and/or ARTH 2020 will complete these courses upon transfer to MCA. These students will instead complete requirements in the Humanities/Fine Arts as prescribed at the community college where they are enrolled. In this case, the Humanities/Fine Arts classes will transfer to MCA as electives. ART 1030 Art Appreciation does not transfer to MCA and should not be taken at the community college to meet Humanities/Fine Arts requirements.
Students who successfully complete Photography 1 as a studio elective at their community college will receive credit for the required introductory program coursework, if the student is enrolling in the photography major or concentration. See sample projection sheets.
