Director of MFA Programs

Memphis College of Art seeks a creative, innovative individual to serve as the Director of MFA Programs. This is a 12-month renewable appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor, with administrative, recruiting and some teaching responsibilities, beginning August 15, 2015.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will:

  • Be familiar with current trends in contemporary art and theory, but well versed in the skills, craft and traditions of a variety of media.
  • Have a record of effective administrative experience and teaching as well as an active personal practice.
  • Possess an MFA in a visual discipline (required)
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills
  • Commitment to a strong community and collegiality within the program.

Essential Job Functions:

  • The Director will be responsible for the administration and recruitment of an existing program including degrees in Studio Art and Photography, as well as anticipated degrees in Illustration, Painting/Drawing and Metals currently under accreditation review, with the possibility of further expansion.
  • The Studio Art Seminar course is the principal teaching assignment.
  • The Director also serves on the Dean’s Council with Division Chairs and the Director of Art Education Programs.
  • The Director will work to develop a comprehensive strategic recruitment and marketing plan to target local, regional, and national markets.
  • Establish and maintain all academic requirements in keeping with SACS and NASAD accreditation and ensure adherence.
  • Maintain program’s operating budget, oversee program assessment; represent the program at various conferences.
  • Collaborate with Admissions to recruit MFA candidates.

Compensation:

Assistant Professor in Illustration/Comics

Memphis College of Art seeks an experienced artist/teacher to work within a newly revamped Illustration program with a Comics track. Openness and collaborative spirit are essential.  3/3 teaching load.  Position begins August 15, 2016.

Requirements:

MFA in Illustration required along with proven excellence in both teaching and creative practice. Candidates must demonstrate broad knowledge of the fields of Illustration and Comics, strong drawing skills, familiarity with a variety of media and techniques including digital, and deep knowledge of professional practices.

Also required: college service; student advising; recruiting; and maintaining creative output consistent with the mission of a professional art school. Familiarity with course/program assessment is desirable.

Compensation:

Campus Safety Officer

Memphis College of Art seeks an experienced, full-time Campus Safety Officer. Working under the supervision of the Campus Safety Director, the Campus Safety Officer is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening or weekend on any MCA campus as assigned. Qualified candidates should have a proven background in security and be comfortable in a college environment. Law enforcement background is a plus.

Requirements:

  • Meet or exceed the requirements of the State of TN Dept. of Commerce and Insurance
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalency
  • Knowledge of campus policies and city, county and state laws
  • Knowledge of effective methods of investigations
  • Knowledge of geographic area of campus
  • Ability to complete reports relating to an incident
  • Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observation and the examination of records
  • Basic knowledge of computer operation
  • Clear criminal background with no felonies

Duties:

  • Foot/mobile patrol through college properties
  • Locking and unlocking of doors
  • Investigate suspected crimes, report findings
  • Investigate incidents involving persons or property; report probably cause of incidents; pursue appropriate course of action
  • Issue citations for parking violations
  • Safety inspections of campus properties
  • Evaluate complaint and emergency-request information to determine response requirements
  • Other duties as assigned

  • BFA in visual art (MFA or MAT preferred)
  • Background in art and/or art education preferred
  • A minimum of 2 years teaching or public program experience with demonstrated leadership in your media and/or field

 Position Opening for:

Alumni Relations Coordinator

Memphis College of Art is seeking and Alumni Relations Coordinator to serve as the lead staff person on all efforts to develop and strengthen lifelong relationships between alumni and MCA. The Alumni Relations Coordinator will liaise with MCA Vice Presidents, Faculty and Directors to conceptualize, develop, and implement innovative alumni programs and activities with the goal of strengthening alumni affinity towards MCA. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Advancement.

Responsibilities will include:

            • Performing with a high level of autonomy and initiative.
            • Creating a strategy for development of alumni targeted and alumni centric communications, to include: website, FaceBook and other social media streams, emails and mailings, and newsletter items.
            • Developing strategies to increase donor interaction with the MCA website including an interactive alumni directory and increased job postings.
            • Developing strong relationships with MCA alumni, engaging alumni volunteers to support alumni initiatives and programs, and staying abreast of alumni professional accomplishments and milestones for inclusion in MCA communications.
            • Designing and implementing successful collaborative student and graduate alumni programming, such as Homecoming and Commencement events, professional student internships/externships.
            • Coordinating alumni speakers as a resource to faculty/as guest speakers in the classroom, especially as it relates to P2 programming.
            • Developing and facilitating young alumni engagement and cultivating current students for future involvement with MCA. This includes working closely with the VP of Student Affairs, student volunteers and clubs to better engage students and recent graduates in the intellectual life of MCA and increase faculty involvement with alumni.
            • Becoming proficient in alumni data collection, database entry and management, to include maintaining the accuracy and currency of the alumni database.
            • Planning and staging alumni events, to include the Alumni Biennial Exhibition, and professional networking events. Working to ensure a high level of alumni participation and attendance at other MCA events.
            • In addition to the above responsibilities, this position is expected to initiate and support all appropriate tactics established to support the MCA strategic Plan objectives and strategies.

Essential skills/requirements:

            • Bachelor’s degree, with preference given to Memphis College of Art graduates.
            • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues throughout MCA, with MCA alumni, other constituents, and the public.
            • Experience working in and through social media platforms.
            • The demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers.
            • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills.
            • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve MCA goals.
            • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
            • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines.
            • Database entry and report experience.
            • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Position Opening For:

Adjunct Drawing Instructors

Memphis College of Art seeks adjunct faculty to teach introductory-level and life drawing classes.  Drawing 1 and 2 are part of a rigorous Foundations program and based wholly on traditional drawing from observation.  Knowledge of linear perspective is necessary.  Drawing 1 is focused on line while Drawing 2 deals with value studies in a variety of materials and techniques.

Life Drawing is an upper-level course and involves line and value studies from the nude in a variety of materials and techniques.  The focus of this class is on the structure of the human figure through planar development and the convincing representation of the figure in space.

MFA preferred, BFA required.  Experience teaching is preferred.

Requirements: Terminal degree (EdD, or PhD) in either education or art education with a strong background in K-12 art instruction to meet SACSCOC, NCATE and Tennessee State Board of Examiner’s requirements. Candidates must be effective in communication; have strong organizational and writing skills, be willing to work in the evening and possibly in the summer months; and be open to evaluation and critique.
