Memphis College of Art Announces 60 Years of Rock and Roll

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Memphis College of Art will present 60 Years of Rock and Roll, an exhibition of work created in partnership with the Levitt Shell, from Oct. 8–22 in the Lower Gallery of Rust Hall, 1930 Poplar Ave., Overton Park. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Oct. 9, 6:30–8 p.m.

The exhibition features work by the design and illustration students of Assistant Professor of Design Arts Cat Normoyle and Visiting Instructor of Illustration Shane McDermott. The works were submitted as part of an artwork competition sponsored by the Levitt Shell to develop a design for t-shirts and posters around their celebration of 60 Years of Rock and Roll at the Shell. On July 30, 1954, at the Overton Park Shell (now the Levitt Shell) Elvis Presley opened for concert headliner Slim Whitman, stealing the show and cementing Memphis’ place in music history as the birthplace of rock and roll.

Ashley Segarra was announced as the competition winner and her designs will be produced and on sale at the Levitt Shell for the fall concert series. The remaining competition winners will be announced at the opening reception on Oct. 9. Students participating in the contest are Ashley Lulo, Ashley Segarra, Bailey Brocato, Bianca Smith, Britney Boswell, Britni Morgan, Brittany Santos, Dejané Anderson, George Brooks, Grace Shore, Heather Morgan, Jacob Gambill, Jessica Vandenberg, John Wilbanks, Joni Miller, Kai Myers, Kathie Rupert, Mat Kaminski, Michaela Dowdy-Cannon, Natalie Jackson, Rashad Worthy, Robert Burns, William Godfrey and Zara Garza.

Gallery hours for the 60 Years of Rock and Roll exhibition are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. and Sunday, noon – 4 p.m. For additional information, visit mca.edu.
