Memphis College of Art Celebrates 75 Years

Memphis, TN–Memphis College of Art is celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. The milestone is marked with a series of free events that engage MCA’s community, students, faculty, alumni, friends and supporters. The celebration’s theme: “Memphis College of Art’s 75th Anniversary: Fulfilling Dreams, Shaping the Future,” reflects on 75 years of developing artists and advancing art in the Mid-South and beyond.

Kicking off the anniversary celebration is an opening reception on August 26 from 6-9 pm at the Hyde Gallery in the Nesin Graduate School, located at 477 South Main Street. The reception invites the community to “look back, look ahead and look around” and join in celebrating the return of two highly accomplished professors, the debut of the College’s new leadership and the College’s legacy as it continues to make its mark.

New work by Maritza Dávila and Fred Burton–two of the College’s longest serving Professors (1982 and 1987 respectively)–created while on sabbatical will be on view in the gallery. MCA’s new President Dr. Ron Jones, along with the Alumni Association’s new Executive Committee, will be on hand to meet the community, and together celebrate 75 years of artmaking.

The anniversary celebration’s theme “Fulfilling Dreams, Shaping the Future,” is designed with MCA’s students, alumni, faculty and friends in mind. A series of commemorative events include the inauguration of MCA’s 12th president, the debut of a historical documentary, and a 75th Anniversary Gala. Other events planned are lectures, exhibits, gallery talks and campus tours designed to reconnect with alumni, thank long-time friends and supporters and build meaningful connections with the College. Students, alumni, faculty and friends will be invited to share their stories about MCA, be they reminisces of inspirational teachers, classes or fetes on MCA’s website and on Facebook.
