NEWS RELEASE Contact: Michelle Byrd Director of Public Relations firstname.lastname@example.org (901) 272-5111 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 25, 2011 MCA professor awarded Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Lahore, Pakistan Memphis, TN–Dr. Catherine (Cathy) Wilson, Memphis College of Art Associate Professor and Director of Art Education Programs, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar to spend part of the coming year in Pakistan working with a local university to develop a masters in Art Education program. The Fulbright Program, established in 1946, is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The highly prestigious program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year to lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. Dr. Wilson is helping develop a teacher training program for Art Education at the School of Visual Arts and Design at Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. The BNU, established in 2003, is a liberal arts university, the first of its kind in the private sector in Pakistan. Dr. Wilson will be teaching Art Education courses while helping to establish the program. "I am honored to have received this award and look forward to continuing the work I began with BNU this year," said Wilson. "BNU's program, much like MCA's art education graduate program, focuses on building an understanding and appreciation of art in children, as well as developing artistic skills and creative capacity. Our mutual goals include teaching problem solving skills, expanding understandings in new and imaginative ways, and helping students gain a wider world view of the present and past." "This project presents a wonderful opportunity for both Dr. Wilson and for the USA," said Ken Strickland, Dean of MCA. "Sharing her thirty plus years of experience in art education should provide the Beaconhouse National University with a valuable cross-cultural perspective on education. The ability to share a western point of view in artmaking and art history will be a great addition to the already rich art culture and history of Pakistan." Memphis College of Art provides a rigorous curriculum in an intimate, diverse community to empower generations of leading artists, designers and educators to flourish professionally and contribute valuable ideas to society. The region's only independent art and design college to offer graduate programs, MCA is fully accredited with expert, nationally renowned faculty and grants BFA, MFA, MA in Art Education and MA in Teaching degrees with graduates excelling in various careers across the country and internationally.
